Earthen Movements Yoga is a methodology of approaching yoga in a slower, less strenuous way, allowing those with less or no experience, learn to access the basic poses of yoga while giving them a path to advancement. Many people bold enough to go take an in-person beginner yoga class often find that the class they signed up for, didn't feel beginner. It's often taught by teachers who are still gaining enough professional experience to teach harder classes or build their own following. I'm not saying this is innately "bad," but it is a reality in the yoga business. however, these practices can leave a newcomer feeling uncomfortable. The philosophy of Earthen Movements is that in order to be more effective in teaching beginners, an instructor needs lots of experience teaching various levels to be able understand the true beginner and lead them towards whatever level of advancement they're ready for.
There are a few levels in our regime: True Beginner, Proficient Beginner, and Intermediate. Movement Restricted yoga is also available, and is considered all levels.
~ Level 1 - True Beginner: You've never done yoga before, it's been years since you have done yoga, you don't have any other exercise routine in place.
~ Level 2 - Proficient Beginner: Used to do yoga but haven't in many years, does have another exercise routine going, can name several poses and feels confident in both alignment and execution.
-Chair Yoga - for the Movement Restricted: bound to a chair, has severe trouble getting up and down, cannot get on the floor, needs assistance to stand or walk, those who have been injured and are recovering, severe inflexibility, and the elderly.
True beginners are the people who are just opening up to the idea of yoga, don't know any poses, and "can't touch their toes," so to speak. It could even be someone who used to do all sorts of exercising, but is ready to start again. A Proficient Begnner is someone who exercises a bit already or who has some yoga experience, understands basic poses and alignment, moves in and out of poses with better ease even if it takes effort.
Movement Restricted are those who take more time to get in and out of a chair, who do not get on all fours, only stand or walk for brief periods, only sit, or even those who want to do yoga but need a less strenuous pace.
